STEVEN ROLPH MBHI - HOROLOGIST
Freeman of the worshipful company of clockmakers
Steven is one of the country’s experienced and qualified horologists. He obtains the vast majority of his work through recommendations and referrals from satisfied individuals nationally and internationally, also from well-respected organisations such as Sotheby’s.
At 16 he trained at a London Technical College, on a clock and watch-making course. He passed his finals with credit and achieved first prize for his practical work. He was awarded a scholarship from the Worshipful Company of Clockmakers, to attend the West Dean College Antique Clock Restoration and Conservation course; this course is run in conjunction with the British Antique Dealers Association.
After graduation, Steven worked closely with experts in the trade for seven years. Steven is able to restore any type of domestic clock, from Carriage through to Grandfather clocks and he specialises in French Empire clocks. He carries out sympathetic restorations not only on movements, but cases and dials, from metal to enamel to painted dials and metal/Ormolu to wooden cases. Conservation is a major consideration in the restoration of any antique. It is the work of a specialist, who can plan the restoration to retain authenticity, with great care being taken when handling movements, dials and cases.
